Description
Once a Giant is presented as a fairytale, but at its core is a political play about relations between Canada and the United States. In his 1988 book, A Public Nuisance: A History of the Mummers Troupe, Chris Brookes described it as playwright Steven Bush’s “fairytale play about U.S. foreign policy and Canadian resource development.”
Featuring giant 12ft tall puppets, each venue needed a minimum of 12ft ceilings to accommodate their size. The costume of the main protagonist featured 178 dried pigs’ bladders blown up into “balloons” – which the Troupe would blow up before each show.
This show was devised after the incorporation of Resource Foundation for the Arts, but before the Troupe first set foot in the Hall.
